Science Meets Oktoberfest in Columbus, Ohio

German Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences invited the OSU community for a fun night out with German education, beer and brats.

On the occasion of Deutschlandjahr, the German university liaison offices at the German House, led by the University of Cologne and UAS7 offices, organized a panel discussion entitled “Science Meets Oktoberfest” and a subsequent celebration on September 26, 2019 at the Hofbräuhaus in Columbus, Ohio.

Alumni of German universities and universities of applied sciences sat on the panel, described their career paths and discussed the role Germany plays for them today.

Heike Haddenbrock, Principal at German Language School-Cleveland and Board Member of the German Language School Conference, traveled from Cleveland to speak about her work as a Principal here as well as her time at TH Köln University of Applied Sciences, one of the UAS7 member universities.

Nathanial Long, a graduate student at Ohio State University in the Master of Public Administration program at John Glenn College of Public Affairs, was excited to talk about his time as an exchange student at Bremen City University of Applied Sciences, where he spent time as an exchange student with an added aerospace internship in the frame of the UAS7 Study and Internship Program.

Jacob Naduparambil, PhD, Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Ohio State University, talked about his role as a DAAD Research Ambassador, opportunities for funding for study, research and internship in Germany, as well as key points of a successful academic career.

Mark. E. Peeples, PhD, Principal Investigator at the Center for Vaccines and Immunity at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and a professor of Pediatrics and Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry at the OSU College of Medicine, spoke about his studies of the respiratory syncytial virus and his research in Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio and at the Heidelberg University in Germany, as well as his love of beer.

Ralf Bundschuh, PhD, Professor in the Physics Department at Ohio State University, received his Diplom in Physics at University of Cologne. On the panel he spoke about his time in Cologne working as a postgraduate researcher and teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics, and how he got to the point he’s now at.

Other very well received highlights included German bratwurst, beer, pretzels and apfelstrudel at a networking reception and a performance by German Science comedian, lecturer, presenter and author Vince Ebert.

Dr. Eva Bosbach, Executive Director of the University of Cologne New York Office, moderated the event, and, together with Patrizia Nobbe, Executive Director of the UAS7 Office in New York, provided information about study and research opportunities across all of the German universities and universities of applied sciences that have North America liaison offices at the German House in New York.

This event was part of The Deutschland Ambassadors Initiative, which brings together alumni and friends of German universities for a series of talks and networking events in the United States. The initiative is an official project of Deutschlandjahr 2019/the Year of German-American Friendship and is organized by various German university liaison offices in New York to more effectively build partnerships with North American institutions of higher education and to connect with American students and scholars.
