UAS7 mit Panel auf der AIEA-Konferenz in Washington

UAS7 wird am 18. Februar 2015  zum ersten Mal1 bei der AIEA-Konferenz in Washington DC mit einem Panel vertreten sein. Die Veranstaltung der AIEA (Association for International Administrators) findet jedes Jahr mit ca. 800 Teilnehmern aus ca. 40 Ländern in der U.S.-Hauptstadt statt und richtet sich vor allem an Präsidenten, Rektoren, Dekane und Kanzler international aktiver Hochschulen: http://www.aieaworld.org/2015-annual-conference

Das UAS7-Panel präsentiert ein hochaktuelles Thema “Preparing Students for the Global Workforce in the 21st Century”. Dazu sprechen Prof. Bernd Reissert (UAS7-Vorsitzender und Präsident der HWR Berlin), Dr. Joann Halpern (Direktorin des German Center for Reserach and Innovation NY) sowie Prof. Jeff Peck (Dean of Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, Baruch College CUNY). In einem ähnlichen Kontext werden die Redner auch am 19. Februar am Baruch College der City University of New York sprechen.

UAS7 Group Alumni Meeting 2014

On Saturday, November 8, 2014, the UAS7 NY Office hosted its 4th annual Alumni Meeting at the German Consulate General in New York.

The UAS7 Alumni Network North America has been growing to more than 200 students over the last couple of years, most of who previously studied at one of the UAS7 member universities through the Study and Internship Program (SIP). For this year’s meeting, UAS7 NY was delighted to welcome an interesting group of ten UAS7 Alumni most of whom are currently working as young professionals in the fields of business, engineering, and the sciences.

Along with the alumni group, UAS7 NY also welcomed a fantastic group of presenters from the US and Germany:  The first speaker, Mr. Tobias Eckart from Munich University of Applied Sciences, kicked off the presentations by discussing the ambiguous relationship between “German Angst and German Engineering”. Mr. Eckart’s cultural analysis was followed by Prof. Ingo Stadler’s presentation about Germany’s goal of achieving 100 percent reliance on renewable energy. Prof. Stadler, joined the alumni meeting from the Institute for Renewable Energy at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne, and specifically focused on the systemic challenges facing the German “Energiewende”. The third speaker, Mr. Andreas Heidenreich, is the Master Brewer from Paulaner Brewery in NYC. Mr. Heidenreich shared insights into the “Science and Practice of German Beer Brewing” where he not only explained the brewing processes, but also highlighted what’s involved in introducing a German beer onto the international market. Each of the presentations were followed by interesting discussions where all participants were able to share their own professional perspectives.

The day concluded with a tour and dinner at Paulaner Brewery in New York City’s East Village. All participants agreed that this meeting was a wonderful opportunity to meet old and new friends, and to reconnect to Germany.

Dr. Britta Schumacher ist seit Februar 2014 neue Geschäftsstellenleiterin des UAS7-Büros in New York. Im Interview berichtet sie an der Hochschule München von ihren Erfahrungen in Deutschland und den USA.

HM: Nach fast einem Jahr im Amt: Was gefällt Ihnen an Ihrer Aufgabe am besten?

Dr. Britta Schumacher: Ich glaube der Umgang mit Menschen. Ich war noch nie in meinem ganzen Leben so viel in Kontakt mit Menschen und ich glaube, das ist die zentrale Kernaufgabe: Ich schaffe immer wieder Verbindungen und betreibe Kommunikation– sei es per E-Mail oder Telefon. Ich denke, ein Teil meiner Arbeit besteht auch darin, Vertrauen zu schaffen mit den Leuten, mit denen man arbeitet. Man muss erst einmal vor Ort Kontakte herstellen, sodass man ein Gesicht vor Augen hat, wenn man mit jemandem telefoniert. Ich musste unterschiedliche Umgangsweisen mit verschiedenen Leuten lernen, weil nicht jede Hochschule gleich operiert. Mir gefällt aber auch das Veranstaltungsmanagement, die Studienberatung oder auf Study Abroad Fairs zu fahren. Man ist auf allen Ebenen präsent – operativ, strategisch, aber auch vor Ort bei der Veranstaltungsplanung. Gerade diese Vielseitigkeit gefällt mir sehr gut.

Wie lange sind Sie schon in New York? Was hat sie dazu bewogen, dort hin zu ziehen?

Ich bin seit zwei Jahren in der Stadt. Ich habe zuerst meine Dissertation im Bereich North American Studies an der FU Berlin beendet. Das war im Jahr 2011. Dann bin zusammen mit meinem Mann in die USA gezogen, nach Washington DC. Dort habe ich im Veranstaltungsmanagement gearbeitet, auch akademischer Natur, und bin dann für einen Job an der City University nach New York gezogen. New York war schon immer meine Traumstadt. Ich bin in den 90er Jahren schon einmal während meines Austauschjahres in Indianapolis dort gewesen und wollte seitdem dort leben.
