Praktikum bei UAS7 in New York

Hi Everyone!

My name is Meredith Nuber and I am the current intern at the UAS7 liaison Office in New York City. In addition to interning at UAS7, I am a studying to earn a master’s degree in international education from New York University. Within the field of International Ed., I am mainly interested in study abroad and cultural exchange. During my undergraduate years, I became really interested in Germany as I studied the German language at university and spent a very exciting and memorable semester studying abroad in Munich. After my graduation from college, I returned to Germany, spending two years living in and around Munich, one of which was spent working as an English teaching assistant with the Fulbright U.S. student program. Thus, working for UAS7 and their efforts to create and promote student exchange between America and Germany, something that I have personally participated in and understand the importance of, was an exciting opportunity that I could not pass up.

After meeting the director of the UAS7 NYC office, Britta Schumacher, through one of my professors at NYU, I quickly began working at the office and jumped right into the hectic UAS7 Study and Internship Program (SIP) application process. While working through the applications and advising potential SIP students, I learned quite a bit about what is needed for a successful application and how best to advise and communicate with students as they prepare for a semester or year abroad. I also help to plan events for UAS7, help to organize social media platforms, correspond with potential students on a daily basis, update the UAS7 website, and help Britta Schumacher with various daily tasks around the office.

Although this is a short-term internship (it will last a total of three months), I feel that I have already learned and gained so much knowledge during my time with UAS7 that will benefit my future career in international education. I have gained practical knowledge and skills about what it takes to administer cross-cultural exchange and study abroad programs, how to communicate well with students and help them through any challenges they may face, and how to prioritize and implement daily office tasks.  I have made great connections to people in the field, both in the U.S. and in Germany. It has been great working with Britta Schumacher and the UAS7 team in New York and Berlin.

I have truly enjoyed this internship opportunity thus far. The amazing view from the office window doesn’t hurt either!

Adventsempfang bei Generalkonsulin Brita Wagener

Generalkonsulin Brita Wagener (3.v.r.) freute sich über den Besuch der Gäste von UAS7 (v.l.n.r.) Dr. Britta Schumacher, Delchov Ivanov, Amrina Piroos, Matthew Robinson, Anna Messerschmidt, William Marin und Eric Chapek.

Auch in diesem Jahr lud die Generalkonsulin Brita Wagener wieder zu einem Adventsempfang für Freunde und Alumni der im Deutschen Konsulat New York ansässigen Hochschulverbindungsbüros ein. Am 14. Dezember freute sich die UAS7 Büroleiterin Dr. Britta Schumacher über die Teilnahme von sechs UAS7-Gästen, die für die Abendveranstaltung aus Delaware, Philadelphia und New Jersey anreisten. Zwei der Gäste sind Studierende der Fachhochschule Münster, die über den UAS7-Austausch zur Zeit ein Studium und Praktikum an der Drexel University absolvieren. Vier weitere Gäste sind Absolventen des UAS7 Study and Internship Program (SIP) und haben noch beste Erinnerungen an ihr Studium, bzw. Praktikum an der Hochschule Bremen, der TH Köln und der Hochschule Osnabrück. Weiterlesen →

UAS7 auf Karrieremesse an den Goethe Instituten New York und Washington DC

Am 14. und 21. Oktober fand in den Goethe Instituten Washington DC und New York eine deutsche Karrieremesse für nordamerikanische Schüler und Studierende statt. Unter dem Motto “Career Booster German(y)” und “German4Success” beteiligten sich an beiden Orten jeweils ca. 20 deutsche Aussteller, darunter Organisationen, Universitäten und Firmen wie Lidl, Trumpf, Lufthansa und Air Berlin. Beide Veranstaltungen waren mit jeweils rund 500 Gästen sehr gut besucht. Es kamen sowohl Schulklassen aus umliegenden deutschen High Schools als auch Lehrer, Eltern, Studierende und Professoren. Die Veranstaltung in New York richtete sich v.a. an Interessierte aus der Tri-State Area, während die meisten Gäste in der Hauptstadt aus Schulen und Universitäten in Maryland, Virginia und DC anreisten. Das New Yorker UAS7 Büro beteiligte sich an beiden Veranstaltungen mit einem Infostand und mit einem Workshop zum Thema “Career Oriented German Universities”. Besonders nachgefragt waren Bachelor- und Masterstudiengänge in den Bereichen Business und Engineering. Aber auch das Study and Internship Program (SIP) kam v.a. bei “College Freshmen” sehr gut an. Die New Yorker Büroleiterin Britta Schumacher freute sich besonders über die Hilfe von zwei Alumni des UAS7 Study and Internship Programs, die den interessierten jungen Leuten aus erster Hand vom Studium an einer UAS7 Mitgliedshochschule berichten konnten (siehe Foto). Aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage möchten die beiden Goethe Institute auch im nächsten Jahr wieder einen solchen Thementag ausrichten. Auch das New Yorker UAS7 Büro ist dann wieder gerne dabei.

Am Donnerstag, den 28. April veranstaltete das New Yorker UAS7-Büro in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Deutschen Konsulat New York eine Panel-Diskussion zum Thema “Bridging the U.S. Skills Gap – A Transatlantic Discussion on Vocational Training and Best Practices”. Die Abendveranstaltung, die im Auditorium des New Yorker Konsulats stattfand, war mit rund 100 Gästen sehr gut besucht. Als Referentinnen und Referenten beteiligten sich: Dr. Christine Benz (Training Manager bei der Firma Trumpf Inc.), Dr. Robin Mishra (Head of Science and Technology, Deutsche Botschaft Washington D.C.), Prof. Dr. Bernd Reissert (Professor für Politikwissenschaften (Schwerpunkt: Arbeitsmarkt- und Bildungspolitik), ehemaliger Präsident der Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin und ehemaliger Vorsitzender UAS7), sowie Dr. Gale Tenen Spak (Vizepräsidentin für “Continuing and Distance Education” am New Jersey Institute of Technology (NYIT). Die Moderation übernahm Dr. Joann Halpern (Direktorin, Wissenschafts- und Innovationshaus New York).

Mapping the Ecuadorian Rainforest with the UAS7 Study and Internship Program

John Marbut is an Aerspace Engineering student from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (Prescott, AZ), who is currently participating in the UAS7 Study and Internship Program. Mr. Marbut applied for the UAS7 program in February 2015 and was selected for a Study Semester at Munich University of Applied Sciences (Wintersemester 2015/2016), as well as for a hands-on lab internship at Hochschule Bremen City University of Applied Sciences (Sommersemester 2016). We recently learned that John Marbut’s time in Germany had been spectacular and full of adventures so far since he has had the opportunity to join a research team from UAS Munich to Ecuador in November 2015. In the following blogpost John Marbut writes about his experiences in mapping the Ecuadorian rainforest.

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to join a research team and senior thesis project at the Munich University of Applied Sciences, the major focus for the project was mapping the Ecuadorian rainforest. The group was actually invited to do the mapping through their partnership with Amazonica who works with the tribes to help improve their quality of life by improving education and providing medical supplies. The planned project required us to modify the UAV/Drone (it can fly autonomously or via remote control) from the last AUVSI competition. We needed to be able to get high resolution photos of the rainforest in order to be able to generate a 3-D map of the area we flew over, so the team installed a new payload containing more batteries, room for the camera, and an infrared trigger to start the camera. The antenna used to update the information about the drone’s had a range of about 5 miles, however the autopilot could fly without making contact with the homebase and the drone had a maximum flight time of just over an hour. The picture above is from our last flight in Shartamensa, home to some of the Achuar tribe.

UAS7-Alumni beim Adventsempfang im Deutschen Konsulat New York

UAS7-Alumni und Freunde zu Gast beim Adventsempfang der Generalkonsulin Brita Wagener in New York

Eine tolle Gelegenheit zum Netzwerken und einem transatlantischen Austausch bot sich beim Adventsempfang der Generalkonsulin Brita Wagener am 9. Dezember in New York. Wie auch schon im Vorjahr kamen durch diese Veranstaltung ca. 60 Freunde und Alumni der im Deutschen Konsulat New York ansässigen Hochschulverbindungsbüros  zusammen. Neben UAS7 zählen hierzu die Bucerius Law School, die Freie Universität Berlin, die LMU München, die Universität Heidelberg, die Universität zu Köln und die University Alliance Ruhr. Von UAS7 reisten an dem Abend insgesamt sieben TeilnehmerInnen aus der “Tri-State-Area” (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania) an. Die meisten der UAS7-Gäste nahmen in den letzten fünf Jahren am UAS7 Study and Internship Program (SIP) teil und haben noch beste Erinnerungen an ihr Studium, bzw. Praktikum an einer UAS7-Hochschule in Deutschland. Drei der Gäste sind Studierende der UAS7-Mitgliedshochschulen in Bremen, Hamburg und Münster und absolvieren zur Zeit ein Studium oder Praktikum in den USA. Die jeweiligen transatlantischen Erfahrungen der Studenten und “Young Professionals” aus verschiedenen Studien-und Berufsfeldern boten reichlich Gesprächsstoff. Auch der Austausch mit Freunden und Alumni anderer Hochschulverbindungsbüros war spannend, da man so nicht nur RepräsentantInnen anderer Berufsfelder, sondern auch unterschiedlicher Generationen kennenlernte. Auch in diesem Jahr war die Adventsfeier der Konsulin Brita Wagener ein voller Erfolg und UAS7 freut sich bereits auf die Teilnahme im nächsten Jahr.

Starke Vertretung der TH Köln und UAS7 auf der International Energy & Sustainability Conference 2015 am Farmingdale State College (SUNY)

Am Freitag, den 13. November 2015 fand am Farmingdale State College der State University of New York die vierte internationale Jahreskonferenz zu den Zukunftsthemen „Energie“ und „Nachhaltigkeit“ statt. Die Veranstaltung wird jedes Jahr vom Renewable Energy & Sustainability Center des Farmingdale State Colleges auf Long Island organisiert, dessen Gründer und Initiatoren die Professoren Dr. Kamal Shahrabi und Dr. Marjaneh Issapour sind. Diesmal wurde die Konferenz von ca. 250 Experten und Expertinnen besucht, von denen viele aus der Lehre und Forschung sowie aus der regionalen Industrie kamen. Unter den Teilnehmern und Teilnehmerinnen der Tagung waren auch vier Professoren und Forscher vom CIRE, dem Cologne Institute for Renewable Energy der TH Köln. Das CIRE ist ein Zusammenschluss von Professoren und Wissenschaftlern aus den Fachbereichen Maschinenbau, Elektrotechnik und Ressourcenmanagement der TH Köln und wurde im März 2014 gegründet. Vertreten waren Prof. Dr. Christof Humpert (Institutsdirektor am Institut für Elektrische Energietechnik), Wolfgang Kusch (M.Sc., Institut für Elektrische Energietechnik), Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schellong (Institutsdirektor am Institut für Automatisierungstechnik) sowie Prof. Dr. Ingo Stadler (Fakultät für Informations-, Medien- und Elektrotechnik). Die Konferenz in Farmingdale bot den Teilnehmern und Teilnehmerinnen eine exzellente Gelegenheit, aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse vor internationalem Publikum zu präsentieren und sich mit U.S. amerikanischen Kollegen und Kolleginnen fachlich auszutauschen. Gemeinsam mit der New Yorker Büroleitung Dr. Britta Schumacher, war Prof. Ingo Stadler auf der Podiumsdiskussion zum Thema „International Perspectives on Education in Renewable Energy and Sustainability” vertreten. Frau Schumacher stellte hier das Konzept „German Universities of Applied Sciences“ sowie die Hochschulallianz UAS7 vor und sprach über internationale Studienmöglichkeiten und Laborpraktika für nordamerikanische Studierende innerhalb des UAS7-Netzwerkes. University-Industry Collaborations at center of UAS7 presidential visit to New York

How can colleges and universities best collaborate with businesses and industries to serve the professional interests of their students? What can universities in Germany learn from their U.S. partners in this regard, and vice versa? These were some of the questions at the center of the UAS7-presidential delegation visit to New York from November 3 through November 6, 2015.
The delegation included the presidents of four UAS7 member universities: Michael Kortstock (Munich University of Applied Sciences), Ute von Lojewski (Münster University of Applied Sciences), Karin Luckey (Bremen City University of Applied Sciences), and UAS7 Chairman Bernd Reissert (Berlin School of Economics and Law).

On Tuesday, November 3, the group visited the University at Albany (SUNY) where they were welcomed by President Robert Jones and Harvey Charles (Vice Provost and Dean of International Education). The presidents also met with Sanjay Goel (Associate Professor in the Information Technology Management Department at the Albany School of Business) and James Stellar (Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost). In the afternoon, the delegation toured the SUNY Polytechnic Institute at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, where they were accompanied by executive staff members Michael Fancher and Michael Liehr. Building on the earlier successes of the SUNY-UAS7 partnership (especially in the field of student exchanges), the partners discussed potential areas for new collaborations, including faculty and research exchanges as well as mutual grant proposals for international internship opportunities.

On the following day, November 4, the UAS7 delegation and the UAS7 New York office invited partners and friends to a workshop on University-Industry Collaborations at the German Consulate in New York City. The event was designed to serve as a transatlantic dialogue about challenges and best practices in the areas of industry partnerships and workforce development. Its goal was to determine strategies for future collaborations on these issues. The UAS7 delegation was proud to host representatives from its partner universities Drexel University, University of Pittsburgh, University at Albany (SUNY), Binghamton University (SUNY), as well as befriended institutions such as the City University of New York, the German American Chamber of Commerce New York, the German Center for Research and Innovation New York and the German Embassy in Washington DC. UAS7 participates in Virtual Study Abroad Fair

On February 25, 2015 UAS7 participated in a Virtual Study Abroad Fair hosted by Collegeweek-live, the Institute of International Education (IIE), and the U.S. Department of State. As part of the IIE’s Generation Study Abroad initiative, the fair was launched as a pilot project to promote study abroad and internship opportunities for American students.

UAS7 was represented by its UAS7 Berlin and New York offices as well as by International
Offices of some UAS7 member universities. The UAS7 team was available to chat with interested students from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and answered questions about the UAS7 Study and Internship Program (SIP+), UAS7 Summer Schools as well as Bachelor and Master opportunities within the UAS7 alliance. During official chat hours UAS7’s virtual booth was visited by more than 100 students, parents and advisors. The UAS7 booth will still be available to visit until May 26, 2015.

The UAS7 team concluded that it was a great opportunity to participate in the fair, especially
because it contributed to UAS7’s visibility in North America but also because Virtual Study
Abroad Fairs might be the new format of higher education marketing.

UAS7 zu Gast auf der AIEA-Konferenz, im New Yorker Baruch College und in der Deutschen Botschaft in Washington DC

Wie kann man Studierende heute am besten auf den global geprägten Arbeitsmarkt vorbereiten? Inwieweit können Praktika im In- und Ausland jungen Menschen dabei helfen, wichtige Kompetenzen für ihre zukünftigen Arbeitfelder zu erwerben? Wie können Bildungsinstitutionen Strukturen schaffen, die anwendungsorientiertes und zugleich interkulturelles Lernen ermöglichen? Diese und ähnliche Fragen standen im Mittelpunkt von drei Veranstaltungen, an denen sich UAS7 in der Woche vom 18. Februar bis 20. Februar in Washington DC und New York beteiligte.


Am 18. Februar war UAS7 mit einer Panel-Diskussion bei der AIEA-Konferenz in Washington DC vertreten. Die Veranstaltung der AIEA (Association for International Administrators) findet jedes Jahr mit ca. 800 Teilnehmern aus ca. 40 Ländern in der U.S. Hauptstadt statt und richtet sich vor allem an Präsidenten, Rektoren, Dekane und Kanzler von international ausgerichteten und weltweit ansässigen Hochschulen. UAS7 brachte sich bei der diesjährigen AIEA-Konferenz mit einem hochaktuellem Thema ein: “Preparing Students for the Global Workforce in the 21st Century”.  Als Experten nahmen Prof. Bernd Reissert (UAS7 Vorsitzender und Präsident der Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin), Dr. Joann Halpern (Direktorin des German Center for Research and Innovation NY) sowie Prof. Jeff Peck (Dean of Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, Baruch College CUNY) teil. In einem ähnlichen Kontext sprachen die Redner auch am 19. Februar am Baruch College der City University of New York, bei der u.a. Administratoren und Professoren von CUNY und SUNY anwesend waren. Beide Veranstaltungen waren mit jeweils ca. 30 Personen gut besucht und ermöglichten reichlich Diskussionsstoff zu Themen wie “Studium und Praktikum im Ausland“ und „Workforce Development“.
